Basic information
Copper oxide (CuO) is a black oxide of copper, slightly amphoteric and slightly hygroscopic. Its relative molecular mass is 79.545, its density is 6.369 g/cm³, and its melting point is 1326℃. It is insoluble in water and ethanol, but soluble in acids, potassium chloride and potassium cyanide solutions, and slowly dissolves in ammonia solution. It can react with strong bases.

1: As a catalyst, it can efficiently catalyze various organic reactions such as the conversion of methano to formaldehyde and ethanol to acetaldehyde. It can also be used as a desulfurizer, helping to remove sulfur from industrial exhaust gases.
2: By taking advantage of semiconductor properties, it is used to manufacture electronic components such as pressure-sensitive resistors and thermistors. It is also an important component of the positive electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries and alkaline zinc-manganese batteries.
3: It is an inorganic pigment raw material, which can be used to produce blue and green pigments; it is used in glass manufacturing to make the glass appear blue-green and to achieve a clarifying effect; it can also be used as a coloring agent for ceramic glazes.
4: In metallurgy, it serves as an oxidizing agent to remove impurities such as carbon, phosphorus and sulfur from the steel bath.
