Sodium borohydride has numerous applications: as a reductant for aldehydes, ketones, and acyl chlorides; a precursor to potassium borohydride; a starting material to produce diborane and other high-energy fuels; a blowing agent in plastic processing; a chemical for treating mercury-polluted wastewater within the paper sector; a bleach for paper products; and a hydrogenating reagent in the pharmaceutical synthesis of dihydrostreptomycin.
